The drawings are categorised into sections that reflect their applicability e.g.
SECTION 1 = ENGINE
SECTION 2 = GEARBOX etc.
By clicking on the section heading you will open a drawing register which lists all of the Scott drawings which still exist, not all of these drawings are available through the SOC website but may be held in the VMCC archive. Typically the drawings highlighted in blue are contained digitally within the SOC Archive and can be viewed on this page.
TO FIND A DRAWING
Establish the section which embraces the required subject from the subsections below.
Go into section register chosen at current date = year of machine being researched. Work backwards (Dates getting earlier) until component or assembly is located.
N.B. Some components ran for years without change e.g. SECTION 1 Engine, Film No. S1, Shoulder Nut, Origin Date 15/04/1919 was still current at the time of transfer to Birmingham in 1952.
If the component cannot be located work forward when it may be located at a later revision. Alternatively if the component could have been sourced from an outside supplier e.g. Lucas for electrical parts, then go into the Outside Suppliers list in “Scott Holder” File No. 2.
DRAWINGS NUMBER SYSTEM
More than one system has been used throughout the history of the company. Some drawings carry two numbers, a later system having been imposed on the original. Some drawings carry only a part number.
The part numbering system seems to be more consistent than the drawing numbering system. A part number often forms part of a drawing number.
FILING SYSTEM (FILM)
The drawings on film are divided into two groups dependent on the size of the paper envelope that contains them:
Large films L are contained in envelopes 7” x 5”
Small films S are contained in envelopes 4 ½” x 3 ½”
N.B. One film may contain more than one drawing.
The drawings are then filed in sequence of current date. Current date is defined as the date of the latest revision appearing on that drawing.
e.g. Current Date 31/03/1924 : Revision 1 : Drg. No. 1-26/19 was originally drawn on origin date 22/01/1912
SYSTEM RULE
The current date takes precedence over the origin date for filing purposes.
Each paper envelope is allocated a film number:-
L 1, 2, 3, 4, et seq for large films
S 1, 2, 3, 4, et seq for small films
Where duplicate copies of the same film occur they are given the same film number with an alpha suffix.
